Five things I wish I knew before getting pet insurance

waggel-nasma-hero

It’s been nearly six years since I brought Freddie home. Once anxious and scared of his own shadow, he’s now sassy, endlessly funny and completely obsessed with cheese.

Waggel is a UK pet insurer offering lifetime policies, plus services including 24/7 video vet support, behavioural and nutritional advice, and member rewards. I insured Freddie from day one but didn’t fully understand his cover. Here’s what I wish I’d known.

  1. The jargon is easier than it sounds

An annual limit is the maximum your insurer will pay each year; an excess is the amount you contribute towards a claim. Learning these basics makes policies much easier to compare.

  1. Pre-existing conditions usually aren’t covered

A pre-existing condition is an illness, injury or symptom that began before your policy started. That’s why arranging insurance early, before health issues arise, can make a difference.

  1. The cheapest policy isn’t always the best

A low premium may be appealing, but exclusions, annual limits and policy conditions matter. Waggel lets members adjust their annual limit and excess at renewal, helping cover evolve alongside their needs.

  1. You’re buying peace of mind

Insurance means knowing you have a plan if your pet becomes ill, gets injured or needs ongoing treatment, making a stressful situation a little easier.

  1. Support can go beyond claims

Waggel members can access 24/7 video vet support through Joii, expert behavioural and nutritional guidance, and rewards from pet-focused brands.

Looking back, insuring Freddie was one of my best decisions. I’d only change how much time I spent understanding his policy from the start.
